Nintendo's Reggie Fils Aime has said that total sales of DS currently stand at around 100 million, while the total global sales of the PS2 to date are at 110 million. He didnt state that the DS would overtake the PS2 this year, he said that they are certainly on aim to break the record.
quote:
Wired.com: How many units would that be?
Fils-Aime: The last numbers I've seen are somewhere around, from a current DS perspective, we've sold 100 million units.
Wired.com: I'm sorry, I mean, what's the finish line? When will DS be the best-selling console ever?
Fils-Aime: The best that's ever been done so far is (PlayStation 2), and I believe the global install on that is somewhere around 110 million units.
Wired.com: Oh, so this is something you could accomplish this year.
Fils-Aime: You know, now you're speculating. We haven't announced what our fiscal 2010 targets will be. We're certainly on a pace to break through the previous high water mark of PlayStation 2. Let me give you a quick factoid. Here in the U.S., based on NPD data, after 52 months in the marketplace, so this is through February of 2009, comparing to the first 52 months of the PS2 launch, we are ahead of PS2 here in the U.S.

Yeah, Anonymous, and many people own many PS2s, and many had to buy another do to console failures.
But anyway, wow, I didn't realize DSs were this close to PS2 sales... That's pretty astounding.

oh please, each family needs one PS2, while they need a DS for each kid. plus the two unnecessary revisions = sale padding. and the official numbers from Sony confirms the PS2 has sold over 130 million.

These are two different types of consoles, ones a handheld system, and the other is for home entertainment. Another thing is the obvious price difference when they both launched. The PS2 was around $300 and the original DS around $100.
